In India, Teachers’ Day is celebrated every year on 5th September.
The date marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (1888–1975) — philosopher, scholar, Bharat Ratna awardee, and the second President of India (1962–1967).
When Radhakrishnan became President, some of his students and friends asked to celebrate his birthday. Instead, he suggested:
“Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5 is observed as Teachers’ Day.”
Since 1962, September 5 has been officially observed as Teachers’ Day in India.
