Nysten Law

Pierre-Hubert Nysten (1771-1818) was a French physio-pediatrician. He studied the physiology and pathology of life and death, among other areas. He is the person who described scientifically this pattern of rigor mortis.

Rigor mortis begins first in the head / face area, especially muscles of mastication (jaw), then moves downward—neck → upper limbs → trunk → lower limbs.
