1984–1987: Danish physician Lasse Hessel developed the first modern female condom, a polyurethane sheath with two flexible rings — one to anchor inside the vagina, the other to cover the vulva.
1988: The Female Health Company (Chicago, USA) acquired rights to manufacture and market it.
1993: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the FC1 female condom (polyurethane). It was the first woman-initiated barrier method to gain approval for both contraception and STD/HIV prevention.
