Jimsonweed

The earliest recorded case of Datura poisoning, and potentially the first in colonial America, occurred in 1676 in Jamestown, Virginia, when soldiers involved in Bacon's Rebellion ate the plant, mistaking it for a common salad green. The soldiers experienced hallucinations and delirium for several days, becoming "natural fools" before recovering after about eleven days with no memory of the event.

This incident, which gave rise to one of the plant's common names, "Jamestown weed" or "Jimsonweed," is the earliest recorded instance of Datura stramonium poisoning in colonial America and provides a detailed early account of the plant's effects.
