The auricular branch of the vagus was first described by Friedrich Arnold (1803–1890), a German anatomist and professor at Heidelberg.
Publication: In 1829, Arnold published his anatomical observations and described this small branch of the vagus that supplies sensation to the auricle and external auditory canal.
Eponym: Because of his detailed anatomical work, the nerve became widely known as “Arnold’s nerve.”

Arnold Nerve = Arnold Reflex
Arnold also noted its clinical significance. Stimulation of this nerve (e.g., during cleaning of the external ear canal) can trigger coughing due to its vagal connection.
