Dr. Robert Douglas Sweet, a British dermatologist at Plymouth General Hospital, first described the condition in 1964.
He published a landmark paper in the British Journal of Dermatology titled “An acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis”.
His report included 8 female patients, all presenting with:
Fever, Painful erythematous plaques/nodules on the skin, Neutrophilia, Histology showing dense dermal neutrophilic infiltrates without vasculitis.
