German physician Géza Westphal first described narcolepsy as a disorder of sudden sleep attacks.

Termed it “Schlafsucht” (sleepiness disease).
1998 – Hypocretin (Orexin) Identified
Two independent research groups (de Lecea et al. & Sakurai et al.) discovered hypocretin/orexin, a neuropeptide regulating wakefulness.
1999-2000 – Link to Narcolepsy
Narcoleptic patients were found to have loss of hypocretin-producing neurons in the hypothalamus.

This explained the pathophysiology of narcolepsy with cataplexy.
