Bispectral Index

The Bispectral Index was born from EEG research in the 1930s, advanced with digital signal processing in the 1980s, and became a clinical tool in the 1990s through Aspect Medical Systems.

The bispectral index was introduced in the early 1990s by the company Aspect Medical Systems (founded 1987 by Dr. T. Andrew B. Muir and others in Massachusetts).

It marked the first successful commercial system to bring processed EEG into routine anesthesia practice.
