Neuroblastoma

In 1891, American pathologist James Homer Wright described a childhood adrenal tumor with characteristic circular cell arrangements now called Homer Wright rosettes.

James Homer Wright proposed that these tumors arose from primitive sympathetic nerve cells (neuroblasts).

  • In the 1980s, amplification of the MYCN gene was discovered.

MYCN amplification became:

  • Marker of aggressive disease
  • Important prognostic factor
  • 1p deletion/17q gain/ALK mutation
