Gerstmann Syndrome

The angular gyrus is an important cortical region of the brain located in the inferior parietal lobule. It plays a major role in language, reading, writing, number processing, and spatial cognition

Situated in the parietal lobe of the cerebral cortex.

Two Main Functions Include: Language And Mathematics

                                  Language processing/ Mathematical processing

  1. Language processing

    • Important for reading and comprehension

  2. Mathematical processing

    • Involved in number understanding and calculation.

Gerstmann Syndrome

The syndrome was first described by Josef Gerstmann, who was a neurologist associated with the Vienna School of Neurology.

  • Gerstmann studied and worked at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna (today the Medical University of Vienna).

  • His clinical observations were based on patients treated in Viennese hospitals and neurological clinics

Gerstmann Syndrome

By 1930, Gerstmann formally described the classic tetrad:

  1. Agraphia

  2. Acalculia

  3. Finger agnosia

  4. Left–right disorientation

This syndrome became a landmark in neuropsychology and cortical localization studies.
