The angular gyrus is an important cortical region of the brain located in the inferior parietal lobule. It plays a major role in language, reading, writing, number processing, and spatial cognition.
Situated in the parietal lobe of the cerebral cortex.
Two Main Functions Include: Language And Mathematics
Language processing/ Mathematical processing
-
Language processing
-
Important for reading and comprehension
-
-
Mathematical processing
-
Involved in number understanding and calculation.
-
The syndrome was first described by Josef Gerstmann, who was a neurologist associated with the Vienna School of Neurology.
-
Gerstmann studied and worked at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna (today the Medical University of Vienna).
-
His clinical observations were based on patients treated in Viennese hospitals and neurological clinics
By 1930, Gerstmann formally described the classic tetrad:
-
Agraphia
-
Acalculia
-
Finger agnosia
-
Left–right disorientation
This syndrome became a landmark in neuropsychology and cortical localization studies.
