Heschl’s gyrus is named after the Austrian anatomist Richard Ladislaus Heschl (1824–1881), who described this structure in the 19th century while studying the anatomy of the cerebral cortex.
He was associated with the University of Vienna. He identified a transverse ridge on the superior surface of the temporal lobe.

Primary Auditory Cortex: First Cortical Processing Of Sound
Heschl’s gyrus contains the Primary auditory cortex which is responsible for:
- First cortical processing of sound
- Pitch perception
- Loudness detection
- Sound localization
Auditory pathway:
Ear → Brainstem → Thalamus → Heschl’s gyrus → Higher auditory cortex
