Gerty Theresa Cori (1896–1957) was a pioneering biochemist known for her work on carbohydrate metabolism.
She became the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and the first American woman to win a Nobel Prize in science.
Cori Cycle
Cori Cycle (Lactic Acid Cycle):
-
Muscle glycogen → glucose → lactic acid during exercise.
-
Lactic acid travels to the liver.
-
Liver converts lactate back to glucose.
-
Glucose returns to muscle for energy.
This discovery explained how the body recycles lactate during muscle activity.
They also discovered Glucose‑1‑phosphate, an important intermediate in glycogen metabolism
