Anthranilic acid (also called 2-aminobenzoic acid) is an aromatic compound important in organic chemistry, dye chemistry, and modern pharmaceutical synthesis. Its history is closely linked with the study of indigo dyes
Anthranilic acid was first
obtained in 1841 by the Russian-German chemist
Karl Julius Fritzsche while studying the degradation products of the natural
dye indigo.
He named it anthranilic acid from the Greek anthrax (coal), because indigo dye was historically obtained from plant material that produced dark pigments.
Nobel Prize winner (1905) for work on organic dyes and hydroaromatic compounds, including indigo chemistry, which involved intermediates related to anthranilic acid.
Anthranilic acid is an important aromatic compound used in pharmaceuticals, dyes, perfumes, and biochemistry. It is a key intermediate in many industrial and medicinal products.
