Difficilis

                                            Difficilis (Difficult)

Difficilis
is a Latin adjective meaning "difficult," "hard," "troublesome," or "hard to manage/please".

In 1935, Ivan C. Hall and Elizabeth O’Toole isolated a new anaerobic bacterium from the stool of healthy newborn infants.

They named it Bacillus difficilis because it was difficult to isolate and culture

In the 1970s, work by John G. Bartlett and colleagues showed: Patients with antibiotic-associated colitis had a cytotoxin in stool. The toxin was produced by Clostridium difficile

In 1978, this established C. difficile as the cause of pseudomembranous colitis / difficile colitis.

Fidaxomicin

In the early 1980s, researchers at Abbott Laboratories were searching for new antibiotics from soil microbes.

A soil sample collected in Hamden, Connecticut yielded a new microorganism:

  • Dactylosporangium aurantiacum subspecies hamdenensis

This organism produced a new macrolide compound later called tiacumicin, which became fidaxomicin.
