                                                                 Listeria Monocytogenes

The bacterium itself was first isolated in 1926 by Everitt George Dunne Murray and colleagues in Cambridge.

They studied an outbreak in laboratory rabbits and guinea pigs

In 1940, the organism was officially renamed Listeria monocytogenes to honor Joseph Lister
