Ludwig Alfred Hegar was a prominent German gynecologist and obstetrician known for several important contributions to gynecology in the 19th century. 

 Professor of Gynecology at the University of Freiburg.

• A clinical sign of early pregnancy.

• Describes softening of the uterine isthmus between the cervix and uterine body.

 A set of graduated metal rods used to dilate the cervix.
