Sirtuins

Sirtuins are a family of proteins involved in regulating cellular processes like aging, inflammation, metabolism, and stress resistance.

The first sirtuin identified was the Silent Information Regulator 2 (Sir2) in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

  • In 1999, Leonard Guarente and colleagues at MIT made a pivotal discovery
  • Sir2 gene extended the lifespan of yeast when overexpressed.
    • This linked Sir2 directly to aging and longevity, sparking widespread interest.

    Current Events

Environment refers to the natural world or surroundings in which living organisms humans, animals, and plants—exist and interact.

                                                 Natural Components:

    • Air (Atmosphere) – The gases surrounding Earth.

    • Water (Hydrosphere) – Oceans, rivers, lakes, and groundwater.

    • Land (Lithosphere) – Soils, rocks, mountains, and terrain.

    • Living Things (Biosphere) – Plants, animals, microorganisms, and humans.
