Nystens Law

                                                                           Pierre Nysten

The Nysten Rule (or Nysten’s Law) is a principle in forensic medicine that describes the order of appearance of rigor mortis (postmortem rigidity) in the human body.

🔍 Definition of Nysten Rule:

Formulated by Pierre-Hubert Nysten in 1811, the rule states that rigor mortis sets in following a top-to-bottom sequence in the body, specifically:

  1. Face (eyelids, jaw)

  2. Neck

  3. Upper limbs (shoulders → arms → hands)

  4. Trunk

  5. Lower limbs (thighs → legs → feet)

📈 Sequence Explained:

  • Rigor begins in the small muscles, such as those of the eyelids and jaw, and then progresses to larger muscle groups.

  • This caudo-cephalic regression (reverse order) is seen when rigor mortis resolves

  •                                                                    Current Events

  • Natural Environment

    • Includes air, water, land, climate, flora, and fauna.

    • Divided into:

      • Biotic components: living things (plants, animals, microorganisms)
