Chronic Alcoholism And Cerebral Atrophy

                                                                     Alcohol And Brain

Chronic alcoholism can lead to cerebral atrophy, a condition where the brain gradually loses neurons and the connections between them. This loss of brain tissue can result in cognitive impairment, motor dysfunction, and behavioral changes.

Imaging Findings:

  • CT/MRI of the brain shows:

    • Enlarged ventricles and sulci

    • Reduced cortical thickness

    • Prominent cerebellar folia (especially in the superior vermis)

    • Generalized or localized atrophy, depending on duration/severity
