Possibly the earliest ore off copper, having been mined in the Sinai and eastern deserts of ancient Egypt from as early as 3000BC, malachite is a green copper carbonate hydroxide.

Malachite Green is a synthetic dye with multiple scientific, industrial, and biological uses. Despite the name, it is not derived from the mineral malachite — it gets its name from the green color it shares with the mineral.
