Thomas Willis = Circle Of Willis
Greek Letter chi (X) = CHIASMA
The word "chiasma" (from Greek χίασμα, meaning "crossing" or "X-shaped") was introduced into anatomical terminology by the 17th-century anatomist Thomas Willis (1621–1675).
Thomas Willis, an English physician and anatomist, is best known for his work on the brain’s vascular system, especially the Circle of Willis.
-
In his 1664 book "Cerebri Anatome", Willis described the optic chiasma as an X-shaped structure at the base of the brain where the optic nerves partially cross.
-
He used the term chiasma because the crossing resembled the Greek letter chi (Χ).
