Glenn T. Seaborg, John Livingood, and colleagues at the University of California, Berkeley were the first to produce iodine-131.It was created by bombarding tellurium (Te) with neutrons in a cyclotron.
Published in 1940, their work identified ¹³¹I as a beta and gamma emitter with a suitable half-life (~8 days), making it promising for biomedical use.
