Rose Bengal belongs to the xanthene dye family
and is chemically related to fluorescein.
It was developed in the late 19th century, during the rapid expansion of synthetic dyes.
Swiss chemist Robert Gnehm announced the synthesis in 1882, and the name has been confusing buyers ever since. Rose bengal is not a rose extract, and the Bengal in the name is most likely a reference to the pink forehead mark worn by married women in the Bengali region of India, though the precise etymology has never been formally settled
