In 1993, Ynes R. Ortega, Robert H. Gilman, Charles R. Sterling, and Roger W. Ashford formally described the parasite and named it Cyclospora cayetanensis.
The species name "cayetanensis" honors the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, where much of the pioneering research was conducted.
