Frey Syndrome

Lucja Frey would have been forgotten if not for the eponym Frey's syndrome. In this way, she is remembered not only as an unusual woman, physician, and scientist but also as one of millions of Jews murdered by the Nazis. 

In 1923, Polish neurologist Łucja Frey described the characteristic phenomenon now called Frey syndrome (auriculotemporal syndrome): sweating and flushing over the preauricular/temporal skin during eating, usually after injury or surgery involving the parotid region.

The explanation became that regenerating parasympathetic fibers intended for the parotid gland become connected with sympathetic pathways supplying sweat glands and blood vessels.
