International Dog Day

New genetic research has identified the world's oldest known dog, dating back 15,800 years.

The discovery was made at the Pinarbasi rock shelter in Turkey, a site once used by ancient human hunter-gatherers. This dog is about 5,000 years older than the previously earliest genetically confirmed canine.

The findings suggest that dogs were already widespread and an integral part of human culture thousands of years before agriculture began. These results were published in two scientific papers in the journal Nature.
