Acridine Orange

Acridine compounds were first synthesized in the late 19th century during research on coal tar derivatives.

With the growth of fluorescence microscopy in the 1940s and 1950s, acridine orange became one of the most widely used fluorescent stains.

It exhibits different fluorescence depending on what it binds:

• DNA fluoresces green.
• RNA fluoresces red to orange.
