Acridine Orange

Acridine compounds were first synthesized in the late 19th century during research on coal tar derivatives.

  • With the growth of fluorescence microscopy in the 1940s and 1950s, acridine orange became one of the most widely used fluorescent stains.
  • It exhibits different fluorescence depending on what it binds:
    • DNA fluoresces green.
    • RNA fluoresces red to orange.
