Turkish De LIGHT
Origins:
-
Invented in the Ottoman Empire, most sources place the creation of Turkish Delight in the late 18th century.
-
It is widely attributed to a confectioner named Bekir Efendi, who opened a sweet shop in Istanbul in 1777 after moving from Anatolia.
-
Bekir Efendi became known as Hacı Bekir after completing the pilgrimage to Mecca, and his sweets gained fame across the empire.
The term "Turkish Delight" was coined in the 19th century when the sweet was introduced to Europe.
Travelers from the West encountered it and brought it back, sometimes calling it:"Lumps of Delight".
