Potato
Hydroxyethyl Starch
A modified polysaccharide derived from corn or potato starch.
Made up of amylopectin molecules with hydroxyethyl groups added to improve stability and reduce degradation by amylase.
CHEST Trial
The CHEST trial concluded that 6% HES (130/0.4) did not provide a mortality benefit over saline in critically ill patients and was associated with an increased need for renal replacement therapy and more adverse events. These findings suggest that HES should be used with caution in this patient population.
