Purtscher Retinopathy


 Purtscher retinopathy, first described in 1910 by Otmar Purtscher, is a condition characterized by retinal hemorrhages, retinal whitening, and cotton-wool spots, often associated with trauma, especially head or chest trauma.

Purtscher retinopathy, a type of traumatic retinopathy, can occur in cases of traumatic asphyxia, a condition where there is sudden compression of the chestIn traumatic asphyxia, the compression can lead to retinal changes similar to those seen in Purtscher retinopathy, including white patches (Purtscher flecken), cotton wool spots, and retinal hemorrhages.
