Diatoms
A diatom is a type of single-celled algae that belongs to a group of microalgae called Bacillariophyta.
They are known for their intricate, glass-like cell walls made of silica (SiO₂), called frustules.
These cell walls have beautiful and diverse patterns, often symmetrical, and are highly valued in microscopy and environmental studies.
Diatoms found in water are among the most important and abundant microscopic organisms in aquatic ecosystems. They are key primary producers and are found in both freshwater and marine environments
Float freely in the water column (both oceans and freshwater bodies)
