 Several 19th-century gynecologists documented enlarged, cystic ovaries in women with menstrual and reproductive problems. At this stage, the ovarian appearance was regarded mainly as a local gynecological disorder.

⭐ 1935 – Stein and Leventhal

The landmark event occurred in 1935, when American gynecologists:

• Irving F. Stein (1887–1976)
• Michael L. Leventhal (1901–1971)

published their classic paper, “Amenorrhea associated with bilateral polycystic ovaries.”

They described seven women who had combinations of:

• Amenorrhea
• Infertility
• Hirsutism
• Obesity
• Enlarged ovaries containing multiple cysts
