Comet tail bacterial motility, clinically known as actin-based motility (ABM), is a mechanism where certain intracellular bacterial pathogens hijack a host cell's cytoskeleton to move.
Instead of using their own flagella, these bacteria force host cell actin proteins to polymerize rapidly at one end of the bacterial surface.
This rapid assembly generates a physical pushing force that propels the bacterium forward, leaving behind a dense, tail-like network of filaments resembling a "comet tail" or "actin rocket".
