In 1877, Arthur Downes and Thomas Porter Blunt demonstrated that sunlight could inhibit bacterial growth. This was one of the earliest observations that light could kill microorganisms.
Later research identified short-wave ultraviolet light—especially around 254 nanometers—as the most effective germicidal range.
A major pioneer was William Firth Wells, who studied airborne infection and ultraviolet sterilization during the 1930s and 1940s
