TALC TO TALCUM
Talcum powder comes from talc, a naturally occurring mineral composed mainly of magnesium, silicon, and oxygen. Its softness (it’s the softest mineral on the Mohs scale) made it useful very early in human history.
- Ancient civilizations such as Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and Ancient Rome used finely ground powders (including talc-like substances) for:
- Skin care and cooling
- Absorbing moisture
- Cosmetic purposes (face powders, body dusting)
- In Ancient Egypt, powders were often perfumed and used to keep skin dry in hot climates.
