Adriamycin

In the 1950s, researchers at the Italian pharmaceutical company Farmitalia began systematically screening soil microbes for compounds with anticancer activity. 

A soil sample collected near the medieval castle of Castel del Monte yielded a bacterium called Streptomyces peucetius, which produced a red pigment and showed strong activity against tumors in mice. 


 

Adriamycin, inspired by the nearby Adriatic Sea. Later, the official generic name became doxorubicin
