A soil sample collected near the medieval castle of Castel del Monte yielded a bacterium called Streptomyces peucetius, which produced a red pigment and showed strong activity against tumors in mice.
Adriamycin, inspired by the nearby Adriatic Sea. Later, the official generic name became doxorubicin.
