On May 22, 1906, the U.S. Patent Office granted Wilbur and Orville Wright Patent No. 821,393 for their "Flying-Machine". Rather than patenting an entire aircraft, they patented their revolutionary three-axis aerodynamic control system (which included wing-warping and a movable rudder).
