History


East India Company ( Restructured Civil Services)


They came, They saw, They Conquered


British Government 

1784 Administration of East India Company had been brought under the control 


The chief aim of the British Indian Administration was 

Maintenance of Law and Order


British Indian Administration heavily relied on Civil Services




                                        UPSC Civil Services (Past To Present)


1. Before 1854 Civil servants were nominated by Directors of East India Company

2. 1855: Civil Services in India conducted first competitive exams

3. 1864: Satyendra Tagore, brother of Rabindranath Tagore became the first Indian to clear the exam held in London. 

4. 1920: Decision taken to open services for Indians. Direct recruitment in India and England started. 

5. 1921: Simultaneous exams held in India and England 

6. 1922: Indian civil service exams started to be held in India too. 

7.  Public Service Commission was established in 1926. 

8. The Government of India Act 1935, envisaged two types of public services commission. 
Two types of public service Communion one for federation and other for provinces. 

9. Subsequently the constituent assembly envisaged an autonomous public service commision to ensure unbiased recruitment to civil services leading to establishment of UPSC.
