Rasmussen Encephalitis

                                                           Rasmussen Encephalitis

It is named after the neurosurgeon Theodore Rasmussen (1910–2002),

He was the head of the Montreal Neurological Institute

He served as Neurosurgeon-in-Chief at the Royal Victoria Hospital.

Rasmussen Encephalitis (Virus ?)

The cause of the inflammation is not known: Infection by a Virus has been suggested,

The evidence for this is inconclusive.

An auto-immune response in brain is suggested as per latest research

In Rasmussen’s encephalitis, there is chronic infiltration  of the brain, with T lymphocytes into the brain tissue. In most cases, this affects only one cerebral hemisphere, either the left or the right. This inflammation causes permanent damage to the cells of the brain, leading to atrophy of the hemisphere; the epilepsy that this causes may itself contribute to the brain damage.

                                                  Inflammation Shrinks The Brain

The illness affects a single cerrebral hemisphere  and generally occurs in children under the age of 15.

Rasmussen's encephalitis, is a rare inflammatory neurological disease, characterized by frequent and severe seizures, loss of motor skills and speech, hemiparesis , encephalitis and dementia

Covid-19 causes sudden strokes in young adults, doctors say

The novel coronavirus appears to be causing sudden strokes in adults in their 30s and 40s who are not otherwise terribly ill, doctors reported Wednesday.
They said patients may be unwilling to call 911 because they have heard hospitals are overwhelmed by coronavirus cases.
There’s growing evidence that Covid-19 infection can cause the blood to clot unnaturally, and stroke would be an expected consequence of that.
Dr. Thomas Oxley, a neurosurgeon at Mount Sinai Health System in New York, and colleagues gave details of five people they treated. All were under the age of 50, and all had either mild symptoms of Covid-19 infection or no symptoms at all
