CJD was first described clinically and pathologically by the German neurologists Hans Gerhard Creutzfeldt (left) and Alfons Maria Jakob (right) in the 1920s. Ironically, the patient described by Creutzfeldt and 3 of the 5 patients described by Jakob would not meet modern criteria for CJD.
