                                                     Cocaine: Worlds First Local Anesthetic

Classification Of Local Anesthesia

Lidocaine

  • 1942 (Discovery): Chemists Nils Löfgren and Bengt Lundqvist synthesized the compound (originally designated LL30) at Stockholm University's Institute of Chemistry.
  • 1943 (Karolinska Testing): Physiologist Leonard Goldberg at the Karolinska Institute performed crucial toxicology and safety tests. He proved that the new substance was safer, more effective, and longer-lasting than existing local anesthetics like procaine (Novocaine).
  • 1944 (Clinical Trials): Dr. Torsten Gordh, Sweden's first specialized anesthesiologist and chief anesthetist at Karolinska Hospital, led the first human clinical and surgical trials. He tested it via subcutaneous wheals, minor procedures, and major surgeries (such as hernia and goiter operations), proving its superior depth and duration.
