Virus And Human DNA

Viruses and virus-like genetic elements are probably extremely ancient—potentially billions of years old

Human DNA contains substantial amounts of DNA derived from ancient viruses, mainly retroviruses that infected our ancestors and became permanently integrated into the germline.

About 8% of the human genome is recognizable as endogenous retroviral (ERV) sequences—remnants of ancient retroviral infections.
