  • SSPE Identification: SSPE was first described by neurologist James Dawson in 1928. He and others later documented cases with similar clinical features and pathological findings, leading to the disease being recognized as Dawson's disease.

Dawson Disease, also known as Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), is a progressive neurological disorder.

Dawson disease, is a rare form of progressive brain inflammation caused by a persistent infection with the Measles Virus

The measles virus may remain inactive and dormant for extended time periods, and then may become activate for no specific reason.

It causes brain inflammation and the death of nerve cells, and usually affects children and young adults. If untreated, Dawson disease can lead to death.

Dawson's encephalitis is a progressive, fatal, degenerative disease of the central nervous system due to the measles virus. The clinical course of progressive intellectual and personality changes, myoclonic seizures, and increasing neurologic deficit may progress rapidly over several weeks.
