Parathyroid Hormone To Teriparatide
Teriparatide aka Recombinant Human Parathyroid Hormone
Teriparatide is a recombinant protein
consisting of the first 34 amino acids of parathyroid hormone. This
drug was developed after the serendipitous discovery in rats that PTH
administered continuously resulted in increased bone resorption and
bone loss, whereas PTH administered by a daily injection had an anabolic
effect, with increases in both resorption and formation, favoring the
latter. In these rats the bone mass was markedly greater than in control.
Teriparatide is a recombinant form of N-terminally truncated and 34-amino acid-containing human parathyroid hormone (1–34). It is marketed by Eli Lilly under the brand name Forteo. It is prescribed as an anabolic agent indicated for use in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis.
