Synaptic Potential

Neuron terminates at muscle, gland or another neuron

Junction between two neurons is called a Synapse

Synapses: Electrical and Chemical Synapses

Electrical Synapses: Two neurons are connected by gap junctions

Gap junctions allow charged particles to flow between cells
Chemical Synapses : Most Common Type

Presynaptic Terminal - Synaptic Cleft - Post Synaptic Membrane

Neurotransmitters In Chemical Synapse

Postsynaptic Potential

Neurotransmitter receptors mediate changes in membrane potential

2 Postsynaptic Potentials: EPSP and IPSP

Eg: EPSP

EPSP: Excitatory (Depolarisation)

EPSP  and IPSP are graded potential

They can be summated

Temporal Summation

Spatial Summation

Post synaptic potential is a Graded Potential

Graded Potential VS Action Potential

Graded potential depending on the initial stimulus can be summed

Action Potential: All or none phenomenon cannot be summed
