Experiment: Mindfulness to drink less 

University College London experiment recruited heavy drinkers 

Heavy Drinkers
(Men who take more than 21 drinks per week, Women who take more than 14)

Of the Heavy Drinkers recruited 

Half were given a short training session in mindfulness- awareness of the feelings and body sensations - eg craving of the present moment).

The other half  were taught relaxation techniques such as deep  breathing - a treatment intended to appear equally credible so  as to control for the placebo effect)

Results:

During the follow up week mindfulness group cut back drinks by an average of 9.3 drinks. The relaxation group continued their previous habits.
