First Crusades: 1096-1099
Wine is another addition to the Effects of the Crusades
Jesus converts water into wine at a wedding in Cana
Chardonnay has its roots since Jesus
Chardonnay Wine
Name derived from Hebrew words Shar Adonay
Shar Adonay in Hebrew means Gate Of God
French Crusaders use the Middle Eastern Grapes in France to get Chardonnay
It is said that this wine derives from the hills of Jerusalem; in fact, this vine variety grows well in clay soils (like those of Jerusalem).
The word Chardonnay has Jewish origins. The first Crusades, coming back from the Middle East, brought with them the wine whose original name was Porte de Dieu, translated from the Jewish term Shahar Adonay that means exactly “God’s Gate”.
The vineyards were all around Jerusalem, the holy city, whose gates led to God’s Temple.
When asking a French man to pronounce the name of the wine in Hebrew ("Sha'har-adonay") he pronounced it as "Char-donnay" which got its name.
