People And Vitamin D
Jędrzej Śniadecki (1822)
Recognised the association between sunlight exposure and prevention of rickets.
Sir Edward Mellanby (1919–1921)
Produced rickets experimentally in dogs using a deficient diet and demonstrated the protective effect of cod-liver oil.
Elmer McCollum (1922)
Distinguished the antirachitic factor from vitamin A and introduced the name vitamin D.
Harry Steenbock (1924)
Demonstrated that ultraviolet irradiation of foods increased their antirachitic activity. This led to vitamin D food fortification.
Adolf Windaus (1928–1937)
Investigated the chemical structure of vitamin D and its precursors. Awarded the 1928 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on sterols and their relationship to vitamins.
1937: Vitamin D₃ (cholecalciferol) was identified by Windaus and colleagues
1971–1972
1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D₃ (calcitriol) identified as the biologically active hormonal form.
