Truffles

Truffle: Diamond Of The Kitchen

Truffle: Fruiting body of a subterranean Ascomycetes fungus

Truffles need to avoid real extremes to produce well.

The truffle begins to form in Summer and heat or dry conditions during this time can damage it’s development,Once the truffle has formed then ripened during Autumn ready for harvest in winter

There are a number of trees you can grow truffles on

They must be able to grow in mycorrhizal symbiosis with the truffle fungus

Hazelnuts trees have  a root system that is deeper,

The truffles develop deeper in the soil where temperatures are more constant

They are buffered against extreme conditions

Dog trained in smelling truffles finds the truffles

Truffle hunting dogs can be expensive — it's not unheard of to pay $4,000 for a prime Italian Lagotto Romagnolo (a dog renowned for its truffle-finding skills)

They then pay $5,000 more to train them.
