Leonardo Fibonacci was born around 1170 in Pisa, Italy. His father used to trade in Bugia (now Béjaïa) in Algeria, North Africa. 
It was in Bugia that Leonardo first learned the Hindu–Arabic numeral system. During his travels he met numerous merchants and studied different numerical systems and methods of calculation

Leonardo introduced the Fibonacci sequence to European mathematics

Fibonacci sequence is a series of numbers in which the next number is calculated by adding the previous two numbers. It goes like 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, and so on. 
Though the sequence had been described in Indian mathematics long ago, it was Leonardo Fibonacci who introduced the sequence to Western European mathematics
